Our Family
The Keethianda family of Thora, located 12 kilometers from Virajpet, is a prominent and respected Kodava family. Our history is divided into two significant phases: before 1786 AD and after 1786 AD.
Before 1786 AD: Many centuries ago, our ancestors resided in Napoklu, where they owned a beautiful piece of land. During a visit, the Kodagu king found this land ideal for building a Lingayat Matha and forcibly relocated our family to Thora. The elders were displeased, and an old woman cursed the land, declaring that nothing should prosper there.
After relocating to Thora: The family settled and flourished, constructing a grand house known as Ballyamane and cultivating the surrounding land. However, in 1786, Tipu Sultan’s forces attacked. The able-bodied members of the Keethianda family bravely fought against the overwhelming army and perished. The remaining family members, including women, the elderly, the sick, and 22 infants, were tragically burned alive inside the house by Tipu’s army. One young man, Kalaiah, managed to escape the burning house but was captured and imprisoned. This event marks the genocide of the Keethianda family. Watch the video to know more.
