Historical Significance
Thora witnessed a fierce war 300 years ago between Kotangadi Veeravarma, the king of Wynad, and Siribai Veerappa Raja, the king of Kodagu. In this battle, 1,500 brave Kodava warriors of Kodagu massacred the Wynad army, which consisted of 5,000 Nair soldiers.
The British attempted to cultivate the cinchona tree, known for producing quinine, an alkaloid used to treat malaria.
